Register your interest in a Reception place for 2020

We intend to open admissions for our first 60 Reception places later this month but, in the meantime, if your child starts school in September 2020 and you wish to be notified of the admissions process, you can register an interest in a Reception place by completing the short form now.

APSoL will be an inclusive school for students of all abilities and from all backgrounds with an open admissions procedure. Rather than having a catchment area, we propose to take pupils from six nodes. For more details, please view our Draft Admissions Policy.

The phenomenal site, a building in the west of South Thames College in Wandsworth High Street, boasts excellent transportation links with access via Wandsworth Town or Clapham Junction train stations, East Putney tube and numerous buses.

APSoL in the news / APSoL nas notícias

What a wonderful week it’s been for the APSoL team, kicking off with the Anglo-Portuguese School of London’s official launch at a reception hosted by the Ambassador of Portugal. The Ambassador opened the event and expressed his excitement at bringing Trustees, representatives of the Camões Institute, the Portuguese Embassy in London, the Portuguese Ministry of Education, the Department for Education, LocatED and members of the wider project team together to celebrate reaching this critical stage of the project as a result of their tireless commitment since the initial preparation of the free school application in 2015.

Key guests also included Lord Agnew, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the School System, who spoke about the UK’s first bilingual English-Portuguese primary free school and the significance of the close relationship enjoyed between the UK and Portugal since the Middle Ages. We were also delighted to meet the Mayor of Wandsworth, who we look forward to working with as we progress our plans towards opening APSoL in the superb site that has been secured for the school in Wandsworth High Street.

This was followed on Tuesday by an interview for Portuguese national TV with APSoL’s Lead Proposer, Regina Duarte, held at the west section of South Thames College where it is proposed that APSoL will open with its first two Reception classes in September 2020.

Register for a Reception place for 2020

APSoL is set to open in Wandsworth in September 2020 / A Escola Anglo-Portuguesa de Londres abre em Wandsworth em Setembro de 2020

The Anglo-Portuguese School of London (APSoL), which was granted approval by the Department for Education to progress to the ‘pre-opening phase’ in 2016, has announced that a site has been secured in Wandsworth. The school is now on track to welcome its first pupils in September 2020, subject to any statutory approvals required.

It is proposed that APSoL, the first school in England to provide a bilingual curriculum in English and in Portuguese, will occupy a building in the West of South Thames College (STC) in Wandsworth High Street, London SW18 2PP. This will be extensively remodelled to create a separate cutting-edge, exceptionally spacious and bright learning environment featuring a multi-use games area, sheltered informal play areas and tiered play decks.

The school intends to open in September 2020 with two Reception classes in a zoned off, secure Early Years space on the ground floor. Discussions are also in progress with the Department about approving a separate nursery provision in its own area of the building.

Lead Proposer for the school, Regina Duarte PhD, Director of the Camões Institute and the Attaché for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the Portuguese Embassy in the UK, says:

“Following this significant milestone, the Trust and Project Team are working hard to develop plans for the remodelling of this phenomenal site, appoint staff for the first year, and finalise the education plans and policies. APSoL will have high expectations of all pupils and will deliver a broad and balanced dual-language curriculum, dividing the main subjects between English and Portuguese to immerse the pupils in both. Pupils will learn to communicate fluently in two of the five most spoken languages globally, while also acquiring the skills necessary to cooperate, learn, and interact with each other and the world. Enrichment and co-curricular activities will provide opportunities for all pupils to foster their abilities and interests.”

The new primary school has already received a huge amount of interest from communities in a wide area of South and West London. It will open further consultation on its plans during September 2019 and intends to open for applications for Reception Year places in November 2019.

Site news

We have been working relentlessly alongside the Department for Education (DfE) and their property advisors, LocatEd, to secure a site for the Anglo-Portuguese School of London. In common with a number of free school projects across London where land and buildings are at a premium, this has taken longer than we had hoped when the school was approved to the ‘pre-opening’ phase in autumn 2016.

We are delighted that we are now in a position to announce that two potential sites, both of which are suitable for establishing a first-rate learning environment for our primary school, have now been identified in the Lambeth, SW8 and the Wandsworth, SW18 areas. We are now working towards securing one of these but, as negotiations around securing a site are commercially sensitive, the Education and Skills Funding Agency stipulates that the details of potential sites must be kept confidential until a site has been confirmed. We will share details of the proposed location as soon as we are able.

A provisional opening date for our first Reception classes will be confirmed by the DfE once the site has been secured and once the time needed for obtaining planning permission and completing necessary building works or refurbishment has been assessed. We are disappointed that the children of many of those of you who originally supported our plans will now be too old to attend our school but it is your tremendous support which has got us to this stage and we thank you sincerely for this as our vision moves another step towards fruition.

Do you or your friends have a child aged two or under? We need your support!

As the school will be opening later than originally planned, we are required by the DfE to evidence the ongoing demand for admissions. As such, we are asking parents and carers with children aged two and under (due to start primary school in 2021 or 2022) to pledge their interest in a Reception place at APSoL via the short online form.

Register your interest here

Please ask your friends with children aged two or under to register their support.

We are continuing to make good progress on other non-site related elements of our plans to ensure that we are ready to move quickly once a site has been secured and hope that you continue to be as excited as we are about working towards opening APSoL.

We will keep you informed of our progress through our website and on the APSoL Facebook and Twitter pages.

Announcement from Anglo-Portuguese School of London / Anúncio da Escola Anglo-Portuguesa de Londres

We recently attended our first meeting with the Department for Education which we feel went very well. Our key task now is to secure a site for the school and we are working with the Education Funding Agency to do this. Land and buildings are at a premium in the areas of London where we are seeking to establish. This being the case, we will not look to open admissions for our first Reception classes until we have secured a site for the school. This is likely to have an impact on our opening date and parents can be assured that we will not look to admit pupils until we are fully confident of opening in the following September.

We would like to thank all the parents and members of the community who have supported us up to this point, especially those of children set to start school in September 2017 who will now not be able to apply for a place at the school. We are continuing to work very hard with the Department for Education and Education Funding Agency to secure a site for our school as soon as possible and will update on our progress through this website and through our Facebook and Twitter feeds. In the meantime, we are continuing to make progress on other non-site related elements of our plans to ensure that we are ready to move quickly once a site has been found.

Thank you all for your continued support.

APSoL Team

Please continue to support our plans

We are continuing to collect registrations of interest as we need to show the Department for Education that we have continued and growing support for the school from prospective parents and members of the local community.

Application now in!

Our application to the Department for Education (DfE) to open the Anglo-Portuguese School of London (APSoL) in South West London has now been submitted!

The application contained a detailed business case for the proposed primary school, including detailed answers to questions about parental demand, the type of school we will provide, the school’s ethos and the capability of our team. We are now waiting to hear whether we have been shortlisted for an interview by the DfE, which is the next stage of the process and an opportunity to discuss our proposal in depth.

We’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who has shown their support and registered their interest in APSoL – we’ll let you know as soon as we have any news!
