    Packed Lunches

Children who bring a packed lunch from home should be provided with a balanced and nutritious meal that gives them the energy they need for the rest of the school day.

A healthy packed lunch does not need to be complicated. Aim for variety, balance and plenty of fruit and vegetables, while keeping foods high in sugar, salt and saturated fat to a minimum. The NHS recommends that children eat a varied diet and encourages fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy lunchbox.

    A simple healthy lunchbox

Try to include a combination of:

    🥪 Starchy foods
Bread, wraps, pitta, pasta, rice or potatoes. Where your child enjoys them, choose wholemeal or wholegrain varieties.

    🥕 Fruit and vegetables
Include at least one portion of fruit and/or vegetables. Try cucumber and carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, peppers, berries, an apple, banana, pear or satsuma.

    🥚 Protein
Egg, chicken, tuna, beans, lentils, hummus, cheese or other suitable protein-rich fillings can make a satisfying lunch.

    🥛 Dairy or alternatives
A lower-sugar yoghurt, fromage frais or suitable dairy alternative can be a good addition.
