At APSoL we follow Whiterose Maths schemes of learning. White Rose Maths is an organisation that provides maths resources and Schemes of Learning for pupils of all ages, from early years to secondary school. The Schemes of Learning (SOL) outline yearly frameworks that break down what children need to learn during each week of each term to master the learning objectives laid out by the National Curriculum. And resources that are aligned with the White Rose Maths frameworks are designed to be enjoyable, engaging and varied, to help pupils develop a love of learning and work towards mastery with differentiated resources.
At APSoL , we want all our pupils to develop a love of mathematics and experience successes within the subject. We support all our pupils to become fluent mathematicians, who can use quick recall of key number facts to solve problems in a variety of contexts. Through a Teaching for Mastery approach, pupils develop reasoning skills and explore concepts in depth, enabling them to develop confidence, competence and independence with maths. Mistakes and misconceptions are an essential part of the learning process and prior learning is built upon in manageable steps, encouraging children to make connections and spot patterns.
As a school, we follow a Teaching for Mastery approach to our mathematics teaching, which aids our pupils to gain a deep, secure and long-term understanding of the subject. Mathematical concepts are taught in small steps, where the whole class works together on mastering the content. Procedural fluency and conceptual understanding are developed in tandem, as children as encouraged to notice mathematical structures and make connections.
We follow the NCETM and White Rose schemes for maths, both of which support our approach. A typical maths lesson starts with a ‘Flashback’ on previously taught content, to further embed these skills, followed by whole-class interactive teaching of a new concept. Our pupils are then given an opportunity to independently apply these newly-acquired skills through written or practical tasks. ‘Dive Deeper’ challenges provide stretch and further opportunities for depth for pupils who have quickly grasped the new concept.
In addition to our daily maths lessons, our children also take part in short fluency-focussed sessions, which aim to embed key number facts to automaticity. In Early Years and KS1, these sessions focus on ‘seeing numbers within numbers’ and embedding knowledge of addition and subtraction facts within 20. Later in KS2, the focus will be moving towards developing automatic recall of times table facts, including the inverse division facts.

At APSoL we we aim for every pupil to have a positive and confident attitude towards mathematics and to develop a sense of curiosity around the subject. We want to ensure that we equip all our pupils with the ability to think mathematically, solve problems in a range of contexts, and reason around a concept.
Regular end of unit assessments will enable teachers to identify areas that need further consolidation, challenge or support.
